Gokotta (Swedish for ‘rise early to hear the birds sing’) - a brief explanation of how I approached ‘bird life’ as a theme. Research showed that birds and feathers are ever present in folklore and mythology. Some birds (large and small) are believed to be angels bringing messages from the beyond. It is believed that a white feather nearby means an angel is near. While working on my ceramic pieces I thought about how birds have influenced our cultures through the ages. Nest related phrases came to mind ie nest egg, love nest, empty nest syndrome etc. I then embarked on making five different birds nests, the more I made the more in awe I became of the amazing skills birds have in building their nests.
