Biography

After gaining a BTEC in Art and Design at Croydon School of Art, Karen Moser studied and completed a BA Honours Early Specialist degree at the London Guildhall University (now called London Metropolitan University). She specialised in sculpture and some printmaking, combining the two disciplines where possible.

In 2006 Karen received a ‘Training Award’ to cover a week’s printmaking tuition. The following year she was the recipient of a Research and Development award from the Arts Council England. It enabled her to developer a whole body of work on the theme of ‘Fossils from the Future’. In 2009 Karen’s work was Highly Commended when exhibited in the Pallant Gallery, Chichester in the St Winifred’s Open Art Exhibition.

Statement

Central to my practice is a desire to bring to the fore undervalued and unappreciated aspects of existence from both the past and present. In response to these topics, I have frequently recycled materials. My choice of materials is important to me in my quest to draw out new meaning from objects that are regarded as mundane or just plain rubbish. To question Society’s sense of value seems a worthy cause and has been a recurring theme in my work.

In recent times I have taken on subjects outside of my usual parameters. For the exhibition ‘Gokotta’ (a Swedish word for 'rise early to hear the birds sing'), bird life was the theme. For inspiration I delved into myths and folklore and their beliefs about wild birds. Presently I am inspired by the Sussex Prairies, beautiful gardens quite near to where I live. My KAIROS Art Group (6 of us) has been invited to do a residency at the gardens sometime in the future. These subjects along with my photography have intensified my love of the natural world.
